1. Valerie welcomed all to the spring planning session for the Class of '59 SHS Reunion.
2. Attending were: Valerie Salge Miller, Nancy Sowden Burton, Sue Cheeley Fischer, Betty Hoffmeyer Miller, Jerry Baker, Bev Krohne McGill, Bill Lowder, Kenny Otto, Gretchen Hardy Bower, Ron Heimel, Pete Hildebrand, Judy Bunte Dollens, Marlene Wegehoft Lang, Ray Kappemeyer, John Price, Dwayne VanMeter, Sandy Fulford Sharp, Janet Riehl Motz, Jayne Tegeler Admire, Carol Branch Wiese, Linda Condon Helburn, Judy Johnson Monroe, Jeanette Mascher Burbrink, and John Winkler.
3. Valerie introduced Gretchen Hardy Bower, first time attendee.
4. Valerie asked all in attendance if the e-mail sent had been received. All responded positively.
5. Valerie stressed the importance of knowing asap an approximate number interested in attending the Saturday night event, and that this would be the focus of this meeting.
6. A second focus would be the best method or methods in reaching the 113 graduates who have not yet been located.
a. Judy Bunte Dollens suggested our using her '94 alumni directory as a starting point.
b. Sue Fischer Cheeley volunteered to contact various newspapers to place a request that those lost "cardinals" contact her or name indicated.
c. The use of local radio stations as a contact method was discussed; however, that use was considered as unsuccessful.
d. The Internet was also found to be unreliable.
e. SHS sporting event programs were also suggested as a means of alerting the communities of our search
f. Committee members who locate "lost" SHS classmates are to e-mail Nancy Sowden Burton or Ray Kappmeyer.
7. Reports by committee chairpersons on different events were next on the agenda.
a. Dwayne Van Meter presented findings on the Friday night activities. He has the commitment on the cafeteria where all may visit and enjoy snacks/appetizers. He also is hoping SHS Senior Ambassadors will act as tour guides for those interested in seeing the changes in SHS over the last fifty years. Jo Ann Schisla Brown has volunteered to organize the tour. The football game, SHS vs. Perry will follow. Dwayne also reminded Perry residents of the "Golden Card", free entry to SHS sporting events. He also is working on a gate fee discount and a section set aside for the '59ers.
b. Edith Schnier Beck suggested two possible locations for the Saturday Brunch. Bill Lowder also presented "Pipers" as an alternative because of its banquet facilities.
c. Golf is also being planned for Saturday by Harold Skillman (Hap)
d. Jane Tegeler Admire volunteered to prepare a list of "On Your Own Activities in Downtown Indy"
e. Saturday night "Spectacular" is under the leadership of Mike Owen, Madelyn Enders Dyar, and Jane Tegeler Admire. They will commit to a location after surveys are returned giving approximate number of those planning to attend. The consensus of those at this third planning session favored the Indiana State Museum, O'Bannon Great Hall and Ball Family Terrace.
f. Judy Bunte Dollens asked those available to meet with her at her home to discuss Saturday night's theme and decorations.
g. Sunday A.M., a time for "Memories and Miracles"...remembering those classmates who have passed on....Location and exact time discussed but not finalized. John Price is chairperson for this final organized activity of the weekend.
8. Nancy Sowden Burton will be compiling 'mini-biographies" from questionnaires sent to class of '59. She requested pictures to be included in the disc. Ron Heimel volunteered to help in the scanning, etc. A power point "loop" of the pictures will be viewed at the reunion. The "disc" would be the gift for the graduates in attendance and would be offered to those not able to attend for a $20.00 donation. (a suggestion by Ray Kappmeyer)
9. Carol Branch Wiese, the '59 treasurer, will be mailing the surveys, missing classmates list, and "Save The Date...Mark your 09 Calendars, Now" notice very soon. Judy Bunte Dollens, Jeanette
Mascher, Sue Fischer Cheeley, and Betty Miller have offered their assistance. Stamped enclosed envelopes will be included with the survey as well as the deadline for its return.
10. Judy Johnson Monroe, chairperson for Philanthropy '59, spoke with SHS administration. Their suggestion was that any monies received be donated for the proposed "Inner Court", an area with tables and benches where students could visit and/or study. This would be presented to the senior class as a surprise from the '59 class.
11. In closing, the next meeting will be held at JB's at 12:30 on July 12, 2008. At this time the surveys will be used in further decision making.
