Minutes-October Meeting

SHS 50th Reunion Meeting
October 11, 2008

Valerie welcomed all, including these two first time '59ers:  Linda/Susie Yandell Boyd and Jackie Day Brown.  Each meeting brings us closer together.  Wow!!
Quite a few are still on the missing graduates' list. All were reminded to contact Ray Kappmeyer at rlkmeyer@sbcglobal.com or Nancy Sowden Burton at NancySowdenBurton@gmail.com with information on the still missing SHS graduates.
Carol Branch Wiese sent in the current treasury statement:  $624.48
Valerie thanked Susie Fischer Cheeley, Judy Bunte Dollens, and Judy Johnson Monroe for their continued work on publicity and media contacts.
November 29, 2008...Senior Basketball players and cheerleaders will be honored at SHS basketball game.  Class of '59 is encouraged to celebrate with them at the SHS Fieldhouse.

A timeline for the follow-up communication was discussed.  It was suggested that since Ray Kappmeyer had created a great data base with addresses/e-mails, those with e-mails be contacted in that manner, others with letters.  This communication would be a reminder of the dates of each of the activities planned as well as the approximate cost of each.  Carol Branch Wiese has Southport High School envelopes that will be used for this November mailing.
Ray will create labels.  Susie Yandell Boyd volunteered to assist in this mailing.

Friday, September 11, 2009:
Dwayne Van Meter has secured the high school cafeteria for an informal get-together prior to the Southport-Perry Meridian Football game.  Joe Ann Hendricks Steinmeier was thanked by Valerie for her generous offer to provide catered "walk about" snacks for this first meeting.
Betty Miller Hoffmeyer and Judy Bunte Dollens both suggested Bobby Joe's Brewhouse located conveniently to Perry Stadium for an additional time to meet after the game.  Location:  Southport and I-65
This suggestion received approval as an additional casual choice.  Additionally, Bobby Joe's has outside seating and is very close to several hotels. Judy will contact them, as she received positive response from
Southport 's '58 graduates as to its casual atmosphere during their first night get-together/reunion.

Saturday, September 12,. 2009  Meeting at Circle Centre Mall at the Arts Garden at 10:00 or 11:00 a.m.  Jayne Tegeler Admire is checking on availability.  Food options are also being investigated.  Johnny Rockets was suggested as one choice.  Most liked the freedom to choose and adventure Indy unscheduled; therefore, prior ideas for breakfast, lunch, brunch in a more structured setting were dropped.

Saturday Evening:  Indiana State Museum...Time:  6:30-11:30 p.m.  Jayne said all initial reservation fees are paid.  She
also suggested that the invitation be sent in May for an actual commitment as well as payment for the dinner/evening.
Since all other activities require no financial commitment, she felt May/June would allow ample time and create a better response.  John Price supported this suggestion.  Nancy Sowden Burton said that few pictures had been received, not nearly the needed 250.  She volunteered to take pictures and create a current dvd. Judy Bunte Dollens presented a book created by the class of '58 with information, pictures, etc compiled from questionnaires sent out with the invitations.  Decisions concerning the creation of a "memory book" and/or dvd will be discussed later.

Sunday Morning: September 13, 2009
Miracles and Memories...Karen Zoller Weiss, Gretchen Hardy Bower, Betty Miller Hoffmeyer, and John Price are planning this opportunity to remember those graduates who have passed on.  They are investigating a couple of locations, one being the Southport Park shelter house.  Coffee and Doughnuts are planned.

Betty Miller Hoffmeyer suggested a question be included in the invitation concerning the need for transportation to and from various activities.  Those in need of a ride could then be matched with someone attending the same activity.

Valerie thanked all for their efforts and stated that she would check Jonathan Byrd's for available dates in February.
That time and date will follow.
Those in attendance were: Judy Bunte Dollens, Linda Condon Helburn, Susan Fischer Cheeley, Joe Ann Hendricks Steinmeier, Judy Johnson Monroe, Beverly Krohne McGill, Betty Miller Hoffmeyer, Valerie Salge Miller, Edith Schnier Beck, Harold (Hap) Skillman, Lutilda Snyder Osborne, Nancy Sowden Burton, Linda Wade Keeling, John Winkler, John Price, Sandy Fulford Sharp, Jim Payton, Jayne Tegeler Admire, Ray Kappmeyer, Jackie Day Brown, Karen Zoller Weiss, Linda (Susie) Yandell Boyd, and Gretchen Hardy Bower.

------------------------------------------

1.  Valerie welcomed all to the spring planning session for the Class of  '59 SHS Reunion.
2.  Attending were: Valerie Salge Miller, Nancy Sowden Burton, Sue Cheeley Fischer, Betty Hoffmeyer Miller, Jerry Baker, Bev Krohne McGill, Bill Lowder, Kenny Otto, Gretchen Hardy Bower, Ron Heimel, Pete Hildebrand, Judy Bunte Dollens, Marlene Wegehoft Lang, Ray Kappemeyer, John Price, Dwayne VanMeter, Sandy Fulford Sharp, Janet Riehl Motz, Jayne Tegeler Admire, Carol Branch Wiese, Linda Condon Helburn, Judy Johnson Monroe, Jeanette Mascher Burbrink, and John Winkler.
3.  Valerie introduced Gretchen Hardy Bower, first time attendee.
4.  Valerie asked all in attendance if the e-mail sent had been received.  All responded positively.
5.  Valerie stressed the importance of knowing asap an approximate number interested in attending the Saturday night event, and that this would be the focus of this meeting.
6.  A second focus would be the best method or methods in reaching the  113 graduates who have not yet been located.
     a.  Judy Bunte Dollens suggested our using her '94 alumni directory as a starting point.
     b.  Sue Fischer Cheeley volunteered to contact various newspapers to place a request that those lost "cardinals" contact her or name indicated.
     c.  The use of local radio stations as a contact method was discussed; however, that use was considered as unsuccessful.
     d.  The Internet was also found to be unreliable.
     e.  SHS sporting event programs were also suggested as a means of alerting the communities of our search
      f.  Committee members who locate "lost" SHS classmates are to e-mail Nancy Sowden Burton or Ray Kappmeyer.
7.  Reports by committee chairpersons on different events were next on the agenda.
      a.  Dwayne Van Meter presented findings on the Friday night activities.  He has the commitment on the cafeteria where all may visit and enjoy snacks/appetizers.  He also is hoping SHS Senior Ambassadors will act as tour guides for those interested in seeing the changes in SHS over the last fifty years.  Jo Ann Schisla Brown has volunteered to organize the tour.  The football game, SHS vs. Perry will follow.  Dwayne also reminded Perry residents of the "Golden Card", free entry to SHS sporting events. He also is working on a gate fee discount and a section set aside for the '59ers.
      b.  Edith Schnier Beck suggested two possible locations for the Saturday Brunch.  Bill Lowder also presented "Pipers" as an alternative because of its banquet facilities.
      c.  Golf is also being planned for Saturday by Harold Skillman (Hap)
      d.  Jane Tegeler Admire volunteered to prepare a list of "On Your Own Activities in Downtown Indy"
      e.  Saturday night "Spectacular" is under the leadership of Mike Owen, Madelyn Enders Dyar,  and Jane Tegeler Admire.  They will commit to a location after surveys are returned giving approximate number of those planning to attend.  The consensus of those at this third planning session favored the Indiana State Museum, O'Bannon Great Hall and Ball Family Terrace.
       f.  Judy Bunte Dollens asked those available to meet with her at her home to discuss Saturday night's theme and decorations.
       g.  Sunday A.M., a time for "Memories and Miracles"...remembering those classmates who have passed on....Location and exact time discussed but not finalized.  John Price is chairperson for this final organized activity of the weekend.
8.  Nancy Sowden Burton will be compiling 'mini-biographies" from questionnaires sent to class of  '59. She requested pictures to be included in the disc.  Ron Heimel volunteered to help in the scanning, etc. A power point "loop" of the pictures will be viewed at the reunion.  The "disc" would be the gift for the  graduates in attendance and would be offered to those not able to attend for a $20.00 donation. (a suggestion by Ray Kappmeyer)
9.  Carol Branch Wiese, the '59 treasurer, will be mailing the surveys, missing classmates list, and  "Save The Date...Mark your 09 Calendars, Now" notice very soon.  Judy Bunte Dollens, Jeanette
Mascher, Sue Fischer Cheeley, and Betty Miller have offered their assistance.  Stamped enclosed envelopes will be included with the survey as well as the  deadline for its return.
10.  Judy Johnson Monroe, chairperson for Philanthropy '59, spoke with SHS administration.  Their suggestion was that any monies received be donated for the proposed "Inner Court", an area with tables and benches where students could visit and/or study.  This would be presented to the senior class as a surprise from the '59 class.
11.  In closing, the next meeting will be held at JB's at 12:30 on July 12, 2008.  At this time the surveys will be used in further decision making.

Jan. 12, 2008, Minutes

Note: Our thanks to Jeanette for preparing the minutes; and my apologies for taking so long to get them posted….nancy sowden burton.

The meeting was called to order by Valerie Salge Miller following lunch at Jonathon Byrd’s. In attendance were:

Linda Wade Keeling, Sue Lancaster Sigler,
Sandy Fulford Sharp, Jayne Tegeler Admire,
Marlene Wegehoft Lang, Ray Kappmeyer,
Lutilda Snyder Osborn, Janet Riehl Motz,
Edith Schnier Beck, Judy Bunte Dollens,
Mike Owen, John Vance,
Jim Payton, Sue Fischer Cheeley,
Judy Monroe Johnson, JoAnn Schisla Brown,
Bob Gilmore, Bill Lowder,
Dwayne VanMeter, Morrie Epler,
Leland Richards, John Price,
Pete Hildebrand, John Winkler,
Nancy Sowden Burton, Valerie Salge Miller,
Jeanette Mascher Burbrink

1. Attendees were asked to provide information about any classmates not yet found by submitting the name, address, phone number and/or e-mail address to Valerie via e-mail.

2. Dates for the reunion will probably be September 11-13, 2009. Mandy Enders Dyar is checking to be sure there are no major conflicts with these dates, especially downtown in the event some or all of the reunion activities are held there.

3. Activities suggested at the October 13, 2007 meeting include but are not limited to:

Friday the 11th – tour of Southport High School followed by a supper or snacks and the football game (tentatively vs. Perry Meridian HS).

Saturday the 12th – brunch; visit various downtown sites; golf tournament; etc. during the morning and/or afternoon. Dinner at a possible downtown venue.

Sunday the 13th – brunch or other final activity to get together.

4. Dwayne VanMeter has contacted Elizabeth Janckow, assistant principal at Southport, regarding the tour of the high school and use of the cafeteria for food, drinks and visiting from 4:00-9:00 p.m.

It was suggested that someone contact Sam’s Club to see about donated food for after the tour.

Dwayne Vanmeter said that Perry Township residents can obtain Gold Cards that allow free access to the games and other venues in the Township. The normal charge for attending the football game is $5.00 per person.
Note: To obtain a Gold Pass, go to the Administration Building on Orinoco Street; ask the receptionist for a Gold Pass. All Perry Township residents are eligible, and there is no cost. This pass will provide free admission to all functions except tournaments and it is good for life.

JoAnn, who is a former teacher at Southport, may conduct the tour.

5. Mike (aka Mickey) Owen has already arranged for a band if music is wanted for Saturday’s dinner. He has also checked several downtown venues for locations that will accommodate an estimated 300 people. These include the Frank O’Bannon Room at the State Museum and a tent at the Zoo. He asked if anyone had any other suggestions. Someone also asked if the dinner should be held outside of downtown, suggesting Primo’s as an option.

Further discussion regarding location brought up the possibility of the Murat or Scottish Rite; however, most in attendance preferred the State Museum. Mike is in the process of contacting some classmates to assist him in covering the cost ($2,200) of renting the room at the State Museum in order to help reduce the overall cost of the evening for the other attendees.

6. A recommendation was made to locate and invite former teachers to the Friday tour and get-together.

7. Valerie brought up the possibility of creating some type of philanthropic endeavor such as a scholarship for the high school or donation for a particular school need or project. Other classes have done this but it’s not essential and needs further consideration and discussion. This should be a committee separate from the reunion committee(s). Judy Johnson will look into finding out what might be needed at the school

8. JoAnn suggested that alumni be asked to write paragraphs about their lives over the past 50 years. Nancy asked everyone to contribute snapshots from our school years to be included in a digital version of the “Anchor” she is assembling as a souvenir.

9. Jayne offered a great quote for the occasion: “The three ages of mankind – youth, middle age and you’re lookin’ good!”

10. Committees to be developed for the reunion planning:

a. Registration – Judy Johnson Monroe, Carol Branch Wiese & Susan Fischer Cheeley
b. Friday evening events – Dwayne VanMeter (facilities) and Morrie Epler
c. Golf tournament – George Gerdt and Harold Skillman

h. Hospitality (homes/housing) - ____________
i. Teacher contacts – JoAnn Brown
j. Saturday evening decorations – Judy Dollens
k. Saturday brunch / activity - ________

11. The next meeting will be Saturday, April 12 at 12:30 p.m. at Jonathon Byrd’s unless otherwise notified.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeanette Mascher Burbrink
